Foundations of Christian Chaplaincy provides an introduction to the biblical principles, personal character, practical responsibilities, and ethical standards of Christian chaplain ministry.

The course begins by examining the meaning of Christian chaplaincy and the difference between a chaplain, pastor, counselor, and other helping professionals. Students will consider the chaplain’s calling, the importance of spiritual maturity, and the biblical example of serving people with compassion, humility, wisdom, and truth.

The course then explores the practical work of a chaplain, including:

  • Providing a caring and Christ-centered presence

  • Listening with patience, compassion, and understanding

  • Offering appropriate prayer and spiritual encouragement

  • Serving people experiencing grief, illness, crisis, loneliness, or uncertainty

  • Maintaining confidentiality and respecting personal privacy

  • Establishing healthy personal and ministry boundaries

  • Recognizing the limits of the chaplain’s training and authority

  • Knowing when to refer someone to a pastor, counselor, medical professional, law-enforcement officer, or another qualified professional

  • Serving people respectfully without compromising Christian beliefs

  • Practicing accountability, integrity, and ethical conduct

By completing this course, students will gain a realistic understanding of Christian chaplaincy and the foundational preparation needed to serve people responsibly. The course is designed both for Christians who are exploring a call to chaplaincy and for ministry workers who want to strengthen their ability to provide compassionate spiritual care.
